Large, heavy breasts are not only a matter of appearance. For many women they cause daily neck and back ache, painful bra-strap grooves, skin rashes and difficulty exercising or finding clothes that fit. If you are looking into breast reduction surgery in Delhi, this guide explains who it can help, how it is done, what recovery is like and what affects the cost.

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty) is an operation that removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to make the breasts smaller, lighter and better proportioned to the body. The nipple and areola are usually moved higher while staying attached to their blood supply, and the areola can be made smaller. The remaining tissue is then reshaped.

Signs that breast reduction may help

You may benefit from an assessment if you have:

  • ongoing pain in the neck, upper back or shoulders that you link to breast weight

  • deep, painful grooves from bra straps

  • recurring rashes or skin infection in the fold under the breasts (intertrigo)

  • tingling or numbness in the arms or hands from posture changes

  • difficulty running, exercising or sleeping comfortably

  • self-consciousness or clothing problems that affect daily life

  • one breast much larger than the other

It is reasonable to try simpler measures first, such as a professionally fitted supportive bra, physiotherapy and weight management. When symptoms continue despite these, surgery becomes a reasonable option to discuss.

Before surgery: assessment and preparation

At your consultation your surgeon will ask about your symptoms, general health, medicines, pregnancies and future plans for children and breastfeeding. Your breasts will be examined and measured. Depending on your age and history, a breast ultrasound or mammogram may be advised before surgery so that any unrelated problem is not missed.

To lower the risk of complications, you will usually be asked to:

  • stop smoking several weeks before and after surgery, because smoking slows wound healing

  • reach a stable weight, since a large weight change afterwards can alter the result

  • control conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure

  • arrange time off work and someone to help at home for the first few days

How the operation is done

Breast reduction is carried out under general anaesthesia and usually takes two to three hours. The technique depends on how much tissue needs to be removed and how much the breasts droop.

Anchor (inverted-T) technique

This is commonly used for larger reductions. The scar runs around the areola, straight down to the breast crease and along the crease, forming an anchor shape. It allows the surgeon to remove more skin and tissue.

Vertical ("lollipop") technique

For moderate reductions, the scar runs around the areola and straight down to the crease, without the long horizontal scar.

Liposuction-only reduction

In selected women whose breasts are mostly fatty with good skin elasticity, liposuction alone can reduce size with very small scars. It does not lift the breast or remove much glandular tissue, so it suits only some people.

At THE CLINICS MISC, Hauz Khas, breast reduction is usually a day-care procedure, so most patients go home the same day. Some patients stay overnight if they are uncomfortable. If thin drainage tubes are used, your surgeon will explain when they come out.

Recovery after breast reduction

  • First few days: some pain and tightness, controlled with prescribed medicines. You will wear a supportive bra and may have drains.

  • Weeks 1–3: most people need two to three weeks off work. Walking is encouraged; avoid lifting and stretching your arms high.

  • Up to 6 weeks: avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting. Do not drive until wearing a seatbelt is comfortable.

  • About 3 months: swelling, tenderness and lumpiness settle. The final shape becomes clearer only once swelling has gone down.

Many women notice relief from the strain on their neck and shoulders soon after surgery, though everyone's experience differs. Scars look red at first and usually fade over many months.

Risks and side effects

Breast reduction is a major operation. Your surgeon should explain how likely each risk is for you. Recognised complications include:

  • thick or raised scars

  • breasts or nipples that differ in shape or size

  • wound-healing problems, especially where the scars meet

  • reduced or lost nipple sensation

  • difficulty or inability to breastfeed afterwards

  • loss of blood supply to part of the skin, fat or nipple (necrosis)

  • extra skin at the ends of the scars that may need a small further procedure

  • bleeding into the breast (haematoma), usually within the first 24 hours

  • general risks of surgery: infection, reaction to anaesthesia and blood clots in the legs

Breasts can still change with pregnancy, weight changes and age, so the size and shape after surgery may alter over time.

Breast reduction surgery cost in Delhi: what it depends on

Breast reduction surgery cost in Delhi varies widely, and a meaningful estimate is only possible after an examination. The main factors are:

  • how much tissue needs to be removed and the technique used

  • operating time and type of anaesthesia

  • whether you go home the same day or stay overnight

  • pre-operative tests and breast imaging

  • medicines, surgical bras and follow-up visits

Ask for a written, itemised estimate so you know exactly what is included.

Is breast reduction covered by insurance?

Cosmetic breast surgery is usually not covered by insurance, and THE CLINICS does not offer insurance facilities for cosmetic procedures. If you have a health policy and want to know whether your situation is treated differently, ask your insurer directly before surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too young for breast reduction?

Surgeons usually wait until the breasts have stopped developing, often in the late teens or later. Severe symptoms in younger women are assessed individually.

Can I breastfeed after breast reduction?

Some women can, but many find breastfeeding reduced or not possible. If you plan to have children, discuss timing with your surgeon.

Will I need to stay in hospital, and how long is recovery?

Breast reduction at THE CLINICS MISC, Hauz Khas, is usually a day-care procedure; some patients stay overnight if they are uncomfortable. Most people take two to three weeks off work and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for up to six weeks. Swelling settles over about three months.

Will I have scars?

Yes. Depending on the technique, scars go around the areola, down to the breast crease and sometimes along the crease. They usually fade with time and sit under a bra.

Will breast reduction help my back pain?

Many women with heavy breasts report less neck, shoulder and back pain after surgery, but pain can have other causes. Your surgeon will look at your whole history before advising.

Does breast reduction affect breast cancer screening?

You can still have mammograms. Scar tissue may show on imaging, so tell the radiographer you have had surgery. Removed tissue is usually sent for laboratory examination.

Is breast reduction covered by insurance?

Cosmetic breast surgery is usually not covered by insurance. If you have questions about your own policy, ask your insurer.
