Circumcision in Delhi: Surgery for Phimosis and Foreskin Problems at THE CLINICS, Hauz Khas
Circumcision is an operation to remove the foreskin, the fold of skin that covers the head of the penis. It is usually advised for medical reasons, most often a tight foreskin (phimosis) or repeated infections. Some families choose it for religious or personal reasons.
At THE CLINICS, circumcision is done at THE CLINICS MISC, Hauz Khas, a DGHS-licensed surgical centre in South Delhi. It is done mainly by our urologists, Dr Bipul Agarwal and Dr Saurabh Girotra, and also by surgeons Dr Aayush Nagpal and Dr Saurabh Bansal. The surgeon examines you first, explains whether circumcision is needed, and describes the other options.
When circumcision may be advised
-
Phimosis: a foreskin that is too tight to pull back. It can cause pain, ballooning while passing urine, or pain during intercourse.
-
Paraphimosis: a retracted foreskin that cannot be brought forward again. This is urgent and needs medical care at once.
-
Balanitis or balanoposthitis: repeated infection or inflammation of the head of the penis and the foreskin.
-
Scarring of the foreskin, for example after repeated infection or from conditions such as lichen sclerosus.
-
Repeated urinary infections in some patients, when the doctor feels the foreskin is contributing.
-
Religious, cultural or personal reasons, after a discussion with the surgeon.
Not every tight foreskin needs surgery. In some patients, especially children, creams or watchful waiting may be tried first. Your doctor explains which option suits you.
Evaluation before surgery
At the consultation, the doctor:
-
takes your history;
-
examines the foreskin;
-
checks for infection, diabetes or other conditions that affect healing.
Simple blood tests may be advised before anaesthesia, and adults with diabetes are asked to bring their recent sugar reports. Tell the doctor about any blood thinners you take.
Circumcision at THE CLINICS is done for adults and for children over 5 years of age.
How circumcision is done
Circumcision is a short operation in which the foreskin is removed. Three methods are offered at THE CLINICS, and the surgeon explains which one suits you:
-
Conventional circumcision. The foreskin is removed with surgical instruments, and the skin edges are closed with stitches.
-
Laser circumcision. A laser is used to cut the foreskin.
-
Stapler circumcision. A single-use circumcision stapler device removes the foreskin and closes the skin edge.
Anaesthesia. The operation is done under a saddle block, a spinal block or short general anaesthesia, chosen by the anaesthetist and surgeon.
Day care. Circumcision is a day-care procedure, so you go home the same day.
Your surgeon tells you before the operation:
-
which method is planned and why;
-
how long you will be at the centre;
-
the fees for the procedure.
Recovery after circumcision
Some swelling and discomfort are common for the first few days, and pain-relief medicines are prescribed. Before you go home, you receive written instructions on:
-
dressing care and when you can bathe;
-
loose underwear and clothing;
-
when to return to work, school and exercise;
-
when sexual activity can resume, which usually takes several weeks; the surgeon gives you the exact time.
A follow-up visit is booked to check healing.
Call the clinic if you notice:
-
bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure;
-
increasing pain or swelling;
-
fever;
-
pus;
-
difficulty passing urine.
