Enlarged Prostate (BPH) Treatment in South Delhi

At THE CLINICS, urologists Dr Saurabh Girotra and Dr Bipul Agarwal assess prostate symptoms and plan treatment, from medicines to endoscopic surgery (TURP or HoLEP laser), at THE CLINICS MISC, Hauz Khas.

At a glance

  • Urologist consultation, symptom score, ultrasound and PSA test

  • Many men are treated with medicines and lifestyle changes

  • Surgery when medicines do not control symptoms, or for retention, repeated infections or bladder stones

  • TURP and HoLEP: done through the urine passage, with no external incision

  • Usually one night in hospital; catheter usually removed after 5–7 days

  • Insurance facilities available. Cost is an estimate after examination.

Symptoms of an enlarged prostate

  • Weak or slow urine stream, or straining to pass urine

  • Passing urine often, especially at night

  • A sudden, strong urge to pass urine

  • Dribbling at the end, or a feeling that the bladder is not empty

  • Repeated urine infections, blood in the urine or bladder stones

These symptoms can also have other causes, so they should be checked by a urologist.

Unable to pass urine: get urgent help

Being completely unable to pass urine with a painful, full bladder, or fever with urinary symptoms, needs urgent care. THE CLINICS has no emergency department. In an emergency go to the nearest hospital or call 112.

Tests at your consultation

  • Examination by the urologist and a symptom score

  • Ultrasound of the kidneys, bladder and prostate, with a check of the urine left after passing urine

  • Urine tests and blood tests, including PSA, which helps decide whether tests for prostate cancer are needed

You can share your existing ultrasound and PSA reports on WhatsApp before your visit.

Treatment without surgery

Many men with BPH do well with medicines that relax the prostate or shrink it over time, along with changes such as reducing fluids late in the evening and limiting caffeine. The urologist reviews how you respond and adjusts the plan.

When surgery is advised

  • Symptoms continue despite medicines, or the medicines cause side effects

  • Episodes of urine retention (being unable to pass urine)

  • Repeated urine infections, bladder stones or bleeding from the prostate

  • Effects on the bladder or kidneys seen on tests

TURP and HoLEP: prostate surgery at THE CLINICS

  • TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate): a thin telescope is passed through the urine passage and the blocking prostate tissue is removed from the inside in small pieces

  • HoLEP (holmium laser enucleation of the prostate): a holmium laser separates the enlarged part of the prostate from the inside, and the tissue is then removed

  • Both are endoscopic, with no cut on the skin, under spinal or general anaesthesia

  • The removed tissue is sent to the laboratory for examination

The urologist advises whether TURP or HoLEP suits you, based on the size of your prostate and your health. Read more about TURP prostate surgery.

Hospital stay and recovery

  • Hospital stay: usually one night

  • Catheter: you go home with a urinary catheter, usually removed at a follow-up visit 5–7 days after surgery

  • Some burning, frequency and a little blood in the urine are common for a few weeks

  • Your urologist advises when to return to work, lifting and exercise

Erections are usually not affected, but many men notice retrograde ejaculation afterwards (semen goes back into the bladder). The urologist explains the possible effects before you decide.

Cost and insurance

Cost is an estimate after examination. It depends on the size of the prostate, the method, the tests and the length of stay. Insurance facilities available. Our billing team helps with the paperwork.

Frequently asked questions

Is an enlarged prostate the same as prostate cancer?

No. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. The two can cause similar symptoms, which is why the urologist checks a PSA blood test and examines you, and advises further tests if needed.

Does an enlarged prostate always need surgery?

No. Many men are treated with medicines and lifestyle changes. Surgery is considered when symptoms continue despite medicines, or when there is urine retention, repeated infections, bladder stones or bleeding.

What is the difference between TURP and HoLEP?

Both are done through the urine passage with no cut on the skin. TURP removes the blocking tissue in small pieces with an electric loop; HoLEP uses a holmium laser to separate the enlarged part of the prostate before it is removed. The urologist advises which suits you based on prostate size and your health.

How long is the hospital stay after prostate surgery?

Usually one night. You go home with a urinary catheter, which is usually removed at a follow-up visit about 5–7 days after surgery.

Will prostate surgery affect my sexual function?

Erections are usually not affected, but many men notice that semen goes back into the bladder during ejaculation (retrograde ejaculation). This is not harmful. The urologist explains the effects for your case before you decide.

Is prostate surgery covered by insurance?

Insurance facilities available. Cover depends on your policy, and you get a cost estimate after examination.

With age, the prostate gland often grows larger. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is not cancer, but it can squeeze the urine passage and cause a weak stream, frequent urination at night, and a feeling that the bladder has not emptied.
